秋田の地口絵灯ろう祭り、300の灯籠が夜を彩る
秋田市の勝平神社で、伝統ある地口絵灯ろう祭りが5月12日に始まった。境内と町内には、およそ300の灯籠が並び、日没が近づくにつれてやさしい光が浮かび上がると報じられた。
The traditional Jiguchi Picture Lantern Festival began on May 12 at Katsuhira Shrine in Akita City. About 300 lanterns were reported to be lined up around the shrine grounds and nearby streets, with a gentle glow emerging as sunset approached.
風刺と季節が並ぶ灯籠
会場には、最近の出来事を題材にした絵灯籠が並んでいるとされる。クマの出没や詐欺のような話題から、桜の下での花見のような穏やかな場面まで、幅広い内容が見られるようだ。
The venue is said to feature picture lanterns based on recent events. The content appears wide-ranging, from topics such as bear sightings and fraud to calmer scenes like cherry-blossom viewing under the trees.
祭りの名前にある地口とは、ことわざや決まり文句をもじる言葉遊びのことだと伝えられている。来場者は絵と言葉を見比べながら、その年の出来事を振り返るのも楽しみのひとつだとされる。
The word `jiguchi` in the festival's name refers to playful twists on proverbs and fixed expressions, according to reports. Visitors are said to enjoy comparing the pictures and words while looking back on the year's events.
長い歴史と手作業
この祭りは江戸時代中期から続く行事で、2026年3月には秋田市の無形民俗文化財に指定されたばかりだと報じられた。地元に根づいた風物詩として、あらためて注目を集めていると見られる。
The festival is reported to date back to the middle of the Edo period, and in March 2026 it was newly designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Akita City. It is seen as drawing fresh attention as a seasonal tradition deeply rooted in the local area.
絵灯籠はすべて手作業で作られるという。長年書き手を務める 神尾忠雄さんは90歳で、58年にわたって灯籠を描き続けてきたと紹介された。
All of the picture lanterns are said to be made by hand. Tadao Kamio, a 90-year-old longtime artist involved with the event, was introduced as having continued painting lanterns for 58 years.
神尾さんは、テレビや新聞で取り上げられた 話題から題材を決めるとされる。今年は3月からおよそ70枚を仕上げ、夜を徹して作業した日もあったという。
Kamio is said to choose his subjects from topics featured on television and in newspapers. This year he reportedly completed about 70 pieces from March onward, with some days involving work through the night.
若い世代も参加
今年は若い力も加わった。地元の保戸野小学校の6年生が、絵灯籠づくりに初めて挑戦したと報じられている。
This year younger energy also joined the event. Sixth graders at local Hodono Elementary School were reported to have tried making picture lanterns for the first time.
市の文化財指定が、その参加のきっかけになったという。伝統を受け継ぐだけでなく、子どもたちが地域の歴史に触れる機会にもなっているようだ。
The city's cultural-property designation reportedly became the trigger for that participation. It seems to be serving not only as a way to carry on tradition, but also as a chance for children to connect with local history.
13日まで明かりがともる
祭りは5月13日まで続くとされ、午後6時から午後9時まで灯籠に明かりがともされるという。昼とは違うやわらかな夜の表情が、会場の魅力をさらに深めると見られている。
The festival is said to continue through May 13, with the lanterns lit from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each evening. The softer nighttime appearance, different from the daytime view, is seen as adding further appeal to the venue.
