高市首相、韓国の李大統領と安東で会談へ

Seoul announced on May 17 that South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will hold a summit meeting in Andong on May 19.

South Korea's presidential office said the meeting would be a meaningful opportunity to deepen trust and friendship.

The meeting is described as a follow-up to the first summit held in January in Nara, Prime Minister Takaichi's hometown.

This time the setting is President Lee's hometown of Andong, creating a pattern in which the two leaders visit each other's home regions.

According to the South Korean side, the visit is to be treated as a state-level event, and a dinner is also planned.

Traditional cultural performances are also expected, making the event one that stages exchange through culture as well as politics.

Relations between Japan and South Korea are seen as placing importance on steady dialogue through repeated meetings between their leaders.

Seoul is framing the summit as a chance to deepen trust and friendship and appears to be signaling a forward-looking atmosphere.

However, the detailed agenda has not been disclosed at this stage, and it is still unclear whether a joint statement will be issued.

For Prime Minister Takaichi, the exchange following January's Nara meeting also becomes a chance to show a careful, step-by-step approach to dialogue with a neighboring country.

The summit's results will likely be judged by whether they lead to concrete cooperation projects and continued reciprocal visits.
